A Russian drone strike in Ukraine's north-eastern Sumy region has killed an entire family, according to local officials, in a fresh sign of the war's continuing toll on civilians.

The BBC reported that a married couple and their two sons, aged four and six, were found dead in the wreckage of their home in Chernechchyna, in Okhtyrka Raion. Regional head Oleh Hryhorov said the residential building was hit overnight and later accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting it.

Ukraine's emergency service said two residential buildings were partially destroyed in the village and shared photographs of firefighters tackling blazes after the strike. The BBC report said the bodies of the two children and their parents were recovered from the ruins.

The strike came during another night of aerial bombardment. Ukraine's air force said it shot down 46 of 65 Russian drones launched across the country, while 19 direct hits were recorded in six locations. Russia's defence ministry said 81 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight in five Russian regions and reported no casualties there.

The pattern fits a broader escalation. The BBC report says Russia has intensified its aerial assaults in recent weeks, regularly launching hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. Ukraine has been pressing its Western allies for more advanced air defence systems to cope with almost daily strikes, and for longer-range missiles that could hit targets deep inside Russia.

The civilian deaths in Chernechchyna will reinforce that argument. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said the country needs more air defences because drone and missile attacks are increasingly reaching residential areas far from the main front line. The loss of a family with two small children gives those warnings a stark human face.

The BBC report also places the attack within the wider diplomatic context. It notes that US Vice-President JD Vance recently said Washington was considering Ukraine's request for Tomahawk missiles, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a €2bn drone package for Ukraine. Those developments show that military support remains central to the war's next phase even as both sides continue strikes.

For the people of Chernechchyna, however, the immediate reality is more basic: a family home destroyed and four lives lost. Hryhorov said the loss would never be forgotten or forgiven. The BBC report offers no indication that Russia commented on the strike.
