New York police said two men are in custody after an improvised explosive device was thrown outside Zohran Mamdani’s official residence during clashes between anti-Islam demonstrators and counter-protesters on the event date, according to The Guardian.

Police said one counter-protester lit and threw a device containing nuts, bolts and screws at the anti-Muslim protesters. Later, another device was lit and thrown, landing a few feet from officers before extinguishing itself. Tisch said the devices were smaller than a football and wrapped in black tape with a hobby fuse. Those details matter because they show planning, not just spontaneous disorder.
The investigation is already moving beyond street-level disorder. Tisch said police were working with federal prosecutors and the FBI through a terrorism task force. That points to concerns about intent, not just public-order violations. A suspicious device was also found in a nearby vehicle, prompting limited evacuations and a frozen perimeter while the bomb squad responded.
Mamdani said the protest was rooted in bigotry and racism and said violence at a protest is never acceptable. He also thanked the NYPD for its response. Even though police believed he was not in the residence at the time, the location of the incident made it particularly sensitive because it unfolded at the home of a high-profile elected official.
The event combines several layers of risk: hate speech, political mobilisation, physical confrontation and the possibility of bomb-making materials being used in a public setting.
