Four people were killed and two wounded when gunmen attacked a local vigilante commander and companions in Omoku, Rivers State, according to the security group and Nigerian police. The killings caused residents to flee and disrupted markets and businesses.
The principal target was identified as Ozomela Stephen Nwaocha, a zonal commander in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area Security Planning and Advisory Committee, commonly called OSPAC. Three women, including Nwaocha's sister, were also killed.
The assailants opened fire at about 5 p.m. while the group was sitting outside a compound along Oba Road. OSPAC spokesperson Nkem Godknows said the three women died at the scene and two injured people were taken to hospital. OSPAC called for calm while also appealing for more government support. Godknows said the local security personnel were unpaid and lacked a source of income. That organizational concern formed part of his response but did not establish a cause for the ambush.
