At least seven people were killed when a drone came down on a crowded beach in Gelendzhik, a resort city in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, according to local authorities. Three of the dead were children. Regional officials said another 40 people were injured.
Governor Veniamin Kondratiev said debris from an unmanned aerial vehicle fell onto the beach. Local authorities said 21 of the injured were admitted to hospitals and 19 received medical treatment without being hospitalized. The available report did not identify the victims.
The precise chain of events remained disputed. It was not clear from official statements whether Russian air defenses shot down the drone or whether it crashed for another reason. Gelendzhik lies on the Black Sea, about 25 miles from the Novorossiysk Naval Base, a principal hub for Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Krasnodar has repeatedly been targeted by Ukrainian operations against naval and oil infrastructure as the cross-border air war has intensified. That military geography provided context for the flight but did not establish the intended target of this drone.
The incident occurred amid rising civilian casualties on both sides. Russia's Foreign Ministry said Ukrainian drone attacks and shelling killed at least 61 people and wounded 327 between July 24 and July 31. Separately, the supplied report said Russian attacks killed at least 377 civilians in Ukraine and injured 2,129 during July.
