Five suspected gunmen were killed in a confrontation with Mexican Army personnel in the municipality of Los Reyes, Michoacan, according to information attributed to the military and state prosecutors.
The encounter occurred at about 1 p.m. in Los Palillos, a locality near the boundary with the municipality of Cotija and the state of Jalisco. The XXI Military Zone, based in Morelia, reported the location and timing.
A military source said soldiers were patrolling the area when they found the armed men. The source said the group appeared to be preparing an ambush with assault rifles. The initial account did not identify any soldiers as killed or wounded, and it did not provide a full sequence of the exchange.
Personnel from the Michoacan state prosecutor's office went to the scene and continued their work into the afternoon and evening. Prosecutors said the five dead men had not been identified. Their fingerprints were to be compared with official records, and arrangements were being made to transfer the bodies to the forensic medical service.
Authorities placed the confrontation in an area contested by the Los Reyes Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known as CJNG. The two organizations are described as competing over drug production and trafficking as well as extortion directed at avocado growers, packers and exporters. Those broader descriptions did not establish which organization, if any, the five men belonged to.
The report described a network of alliances involving other armed groups on both sides of the local dispute. Because those affiliations were presented as regional context rather than findings from the scene, they do not identify the people killed in Los Palillos.
The clash was the third reported encounter between security forces and armed civilians in Michoacan within five days. Three civilians were killed in a confrontation involving the National Guard and Army in La Piedad on the preceding Friday. National Guard personnel killed another three armed men in Buenavista Tomatlan on Saturday. Across the three incidents, the source reported 11 alleged gunmen killed and one person wounded.
The Los Palillos investigation remained at an early stage. Prosecutors had not publicly named the dead, and the military account was the only description supplied of how the shooting began. Forensic personnel were still completing work at the scene and preparing the bodies for transfer, while fingerprint comparisons offered the stated route toward identification.
