Kyiv was struck by a large combined Russian barrage overnight on August 19, leaving at least 17 dead and more than 40 wounded, according to Ukrainian emergency officials. The assault damaged apartment blocks, warehouses and critical infrastructure across the capital.
Ukraine's air force said Russia used ballistic missiles, 46 cruise or air-to-ground missiles and 168 drones. It reported intercepting or suppressing 41 cruise missiles and 145 drones, with impacts recorded at 28 locations. The air force did not publish the number of ballistic missiles launched or intercepted.
Damage was reported in the Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi and Darnytskyi districts. A children's hospital and a school were among the sites hit, while fires broke out at residential buildings and warehouses. Strikes also damaged infrastructure used to supply heating and hot water, and power was cut to thousands of properties in parts of the wider Kyiv region.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said residents in the Desnyanskyi district and part of the Dnipro district could experience interruptions to hot-water service while repair teams worked. Kyiv declared a day of mourning for August 21.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as a deliberately combined barrage designed to overwhelm defences. He appealed again for Patriot interceptor missiles, saying Ukraine's protection against ballistic weapons depended on deliveries from its partners. Ukrainian officials have warned that stocks of specialised interceptors are limited.
Russia's defence ministry said the operation targeted military-industrial facilities, a transport and logistics hub and warehouses in Kyiv and the surrounding region. Ukrainian authorities said civilian homes and public facilities were damaged. The United Nations secretary-general condemned the strikes and expressed concern about the escalation and repeated attacks on populated areas.
Separate strikes elsewhere in Ukraine killed people in the Kyiv and Donetsk regions, local authorities said. The overnight attack came amid an intensified exchange of long-range strikes, with both Russia and Ukraine reporting large drone operations against targets beyond the front line.
