A major blackout left millions of people without power in Havana and the rest of western Cuba after a shutdown at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant.

The AP report says the outage spread from the western town of Pinar del Rio to the central town of Camaguey, with the government saying it was working to restore the national electric system. Energy and Mines Minister Vicente de la O Levy said critical infrastructure such as hospitals and medical clinics were being powered as two plants came online, but the wider grid was still under strain.

State media said a leak in the boiler triggered the shutdown, and the plant’s technical director said crews first had to locate the fault before repairing and restarting the unit. The report also says a pipe burst caused a water leak and a fire that was extinguished without major damage. That sequence matters because it shows how a single technical failure at one major plant can cascade into a regional outage.

The human consequences were immediate. By late afternoon, the government said power had been restored to only 2.5% of Havana, or about 21,100 customers, and it did not provide a later update by nightfall. The U.S. Embassy warned people to prepare for significant disruptions and to conserve fuel, water, food and mobile phone batteries.

As night fell, people in Havana adapted as best they could. The report describes neighbors cooking caldosas over wood or charcoal, musicians playing along the seawall and others passing the time with dominoes under rechargeable lights. Those images underline how outages in Cuba are not just technical events. They shape domestic life, food preparation and even social routines.

The outage was the second major one to hit western Cuba in three months. The earlier blackout in early December lasted nearly 12 hours, and officials said it was caused by a transmission-line fault that overloaded the system. The AP report also notes that some thermoelectric plants are more than 30 years old and receive little maintenance because of cost.

Cuba’s energy problems are also tied to fuel and geopolitics. The report says the island has dwindling oil reserves and that shipments from Venezuela were disrupted after the U.S. attacked that country in January. Against that backdrop, even a plant-level fault becomes harder to absorb.

The immediate story is therefore both local and national: a boiler failure at one plant helped trigger a blackout that left millions in the dark and exposed how fragile Cuba’s grid has become.
