# BMW recalls nearly 180,000 vehicles in China over air-conditioning wiring fire risk
BMW’s Chinese arm is recalling nearly 180,000 vehicles after regulators identified a possible wiring fault in air-conditioning units that could lead to a short circuit and, in extreme cases, a fire.
The packet’s AFP report says the recall is effective immediately and covers 133,849 domestically manufactured 5 Series vehicles built between December 5, 2023, and April 12, 2025, plus 45,678 imported 5 Series, 7 Series and M5 vehicles produced between June 2022 and April 2025. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said the issue involves a front cabin air-conditioning wiring harness that may be damaged during after-sales air-filter replacement if installed improperly.
The safety risk is straightforward even if the mechanics are technical. A wiring harness can be damaged during maintenance, and if the damaged line shorts, a fire risk follows. That kind of defect is especially serious because it may not show up until the vehicle has already been in service for some time, and because the failure mode can be triggered during routine maintenance rather than at the point of manufacture.
BMW said it will inspect and resecure the wiring harness free of charge. That is the standard remedy for a recall of this kind, but the scale of the action shows how many vehicles could be affected and how wide the model coverage is across both local production and imports. The inclusion of high-end models such as the 7 Series and M5 also shows that the problem is not confined to a single entry-level line.
From a consumer perspective, the key issue is not only fire risk but also trust in the maintenance chain. The regulator’s wording suggests the defect can emerge during later service work, which means owners, dealers and repair shops all have a role in preventing damage. That raises the importance of how service campaigns are communicated and tracked.
The packet does not mention injuries, crashes or a broader market safety campaign beyond China. The verified report is therefore limited to the recall itself, the vehicle population and the technical fault. Still, those facts are enough to show that a large recall is underway and that BMW is dealing with a defect that regulators view as serious enough to justify immediate corrective action.
