The Romanian leu experienced a significant decline on Tuesday, establishing a new record low against the euro. The National Bank of Romania (BNR) set the official reference exchange rate at 5.2180 lei per euro, marking a notable increase from the previous day's rate of 5.1998 lei.
Market activity reflected heightened volatility throughout the day. On the interbank market, the euro-leu exchange rate surpassed the 5.23 threshold shortly after 13:00. Financial analysts observed that this depreciation occurred concurrently with a parliamentary motion of no-confidence aimed at the administration led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
This legislative challenge, initiated jointly by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), served as the backdrop for the currency's downward trend. The timing of the parliamentary proceedings coincided with the bank's announcement, highlighting a correlation between domestic political developments and national currency performance.
Beyond the euro, the leu also weakened against other major international currencies. The BNR reported that the United States dollar climbed to 4.4644 lei, up from 4.4376 lei. This broader trend of depreciation suggests a widespread adjustment in the valuation of the national currency across multiple global financial benchmarks.
Other currencies followed a similar trajectory during the same reporting period. The British pound reached a quote of 6.0453 lei, compared to its previous level of 6.0172 lei. Concurrently, the Swiss franc adjusted to 5.6974 lei, rising from 5.6670 lei in the preceding session. These figures illustrate the comprehensive nature of the currency's decline.
Precious metals also saw minor adjustments in their local valuation. The official quote for gold was set at 653.5812 lei per gram, showing a slight increase from the previous day's reference of 653.2534 lei. This movement in the gold market occurred alongside the broader shifts in the foreign exchange sector.
Market observers continue to monitor the interbank data as the political situation remains fluid. The BNR's reference rate of 5.2180 lei represents the highest level in history, underscoring the current economic pressures facing the national currency as the legislative debate proceeds within the Romanian Parliament.
